✦ Basic I Ching Principles
Meaning of the 8 Trigrams & Key Hexagrams
Click to view the foundational meaning of the trigrams that compose the I Ching.
Qian Trigram (乾)
Image of Heaven, pure yang power, creative and active. Three consecutive yang lines symbolize resilience and unceasing motion.
Kun Trigram (坤)
Image of Earth, pure yin, nurturing and receptive. Earth is gentle yet contains all things, symbolizing stability and tolerance.
Zhen Trigram (震)
Image of Thunder, initiation and shock. One yang line beneath two yin lines symbolizes an eruption of power from within.
Xun Trigram (巽)
Image of Wind, penetrating and dispersing. One yin line beneath two yang lines symbolizes flexibility that deeply penetrates every corner.
Kan Trigram (坎)
Image of Water, danger and depth. One yang line caught between two yin lines symbolizes a hazardous path that still flows forward.
Li Trigram (離)
Image of Fire, illuminating and brilliant. One yin line caught between two yang lines symbolizes external brilliance that needs to cling to a core reality.
Gen Trigram (艮)
Image of Mountain, stopping and stillness. One yang line over two yin lines symbolizes clear boundaries and knowing when to stop.
Dui Trigram (兌)
Image of Lake, joy and communication. Two yang lines beneath one yin line symbolize happiness, openness, and the power to attract others.
The Pure Qian hexagram is the first of the 64 I Ching hexagrams, symbolizing the ultimate power of Heaven. Six consecutive yang lines create a purely yang hexagram, representing abundant vitality and endless creativity.
Judgment: "Qian: Supreme, Smooth, Favorable, Steadfast" — Grand, prosperous, beneficial, and persistent.
The Tai hexagram — Earth above, Heaven below, yin and yang blending to create harmony. This is one of the most auspicious hexagrams, indicating smooth fortunes and favorable affairs.
Judgment: "Tai: The small departs, the great arrives; auspicious and smooth."
The Kan hexagram represents danger and hardship, but not despair. Like water pouring into an abyss, it keeps flowing forward. The lesson: one must endure trials to reach the other shore.
Judgment: "Xi Kan: With sincerity, the heart finds success through hardships."
Ji Ji — "Already Across", symbolizing completion. Six lines perfectly alternating yin and yang — a flawless state, but also the time to be most cautious as peaks easily lead to declines.
Judgment: "Ji Ji: Small success, favorable perseverance; good fortune at the beginning, disorder at the end."
The final hexagram — Wei Ji "Before Completion", not a failure but an open ending. The I Ching concludes with an incomplete hexagram to remind us: the universe is always in motion, never ceasing.
Judgment: "Wei Ji: Success. A little fox gets its tail wet when almost across — not favorable to proceed."

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers about casting methods and how to phrase questions most effectively.
Plum Blossom Divination
The method of Shao Yong (Song). Uses numerology (time, number, phenomenon) to cast hexagrams. Interpreted by Five Elements, Original–Mutual–Transformed hexagrams, and Changing Lines.
Liu Yao Najia
The method of Jing Fang (Han). Tosses coins to cast hexagrams, assigns Stems & Branches to each line, uses Six Relatives and Useful Spirit to judge fortunes and timing.
Both use the 64 I Ching hexagrams but differ in the method of casting and interpretation system:
🌸 Plum Blossom Divination
- Cast hexagram by numerology (time, number, phenomenon)
- Interpret by Five Elements, Original–Nuclear–Transformed Hexagrams
- No need to assign Stems & Branches to each line
- Suitable for: quick predictions, fortune analysis, observing external conditions
☯ Liu Yao Najia
- Cast hexagram by tossing 3 coins 6 times
- Assign Stems & Branches, determine Six Relatives and Useful Spirit
- Find Fulfillment Timing
- Suitable for: specific, detailed questions requiring clear timing of fulfillment
A good question is specific, single-topic, and sincere. Some principles:
✓ Recommended questions: Asking about a specific event. Placing within a certain timeframe. Arising from a genuine "moment of intent", not just for the sake of it.
✗ Questions to avoid: Asking about multiple matters at once in a single hexagram. Asking the same question repeatedly. Asking about matters completely beyond control.
"Moment of Intent" is the exact moment you are genuinely moved, questioning, thinking, or concerned about an event — not asking out of curiosity or entertainment.
In Plum Blossom Divination, the moment of intent is the root of casting. Shao Yong taught that when all things resonate, humans and the universe synchronize at that exact moment — making the cast hexagram accurate.

The I Ching is an ancient Eastern system of knowledge, formed thousands of years ago, used to observe the laws of change in nature and life — not modern experimental science, but not superstition in the sense of worship or reliance on supernatural forces.
Casting hexagrams is a way to record the resonance between human intent and the environment at a specific moment. We view this as a tool for contemplation — helping you reflect on situations and guide your actions, not a definitive predictive tool or a substitute for your decisions.
