What is Tarot?

Tarot is a deck of 78 cards, divided into two parts: Major Arcana (22 cards) representing universal forces and life lessons, and Minor Arcana (56 cards) reflecting everyday situations, emotions, and events. Each card carries its own symbolism, read according to its upright or reversed position and its relationship with surrounding cards in a spread.

The most widely used Tarot deck today is the Rider-Waite-Smith, published in 1909, featuring detailed illustrations on every card — unlike earlier decks that used only numerical symbols. Since then, thousands of versions have been created, but the core system of meanings remains the same.

The Four Suits of Minor Arcana

Minor Arcana consists of 4 suits, each containing 14 cards (Ace through 10, Page, Knight, Queen, King), with each suit governing a different area of life experience.

Wands

22 Major Arcana — The Fool's Journey

The 22 Major Arcana begins with card 0 — The Fool — and ends at card 21 — The World. This sequence is often called "The Fool's Journey": from innocence, through lessons of power, love, death, and rebirth, toward fulfillment.

When a Major Arcana card appears in a reading, it often points to larger forces at work — karmic lessons, turning points, or defining life themes. Minor Arcana, on the other hand, reflects the everyday events and emotions we can actively shape.

Upright and Reversed Cards

Upright
The card's energy is flowing outward, manifesting clearly or actively developing. This doesn't always mean "positive" — an upright Tower still signals sudden upheaval.
Reversed
Energy is blocked, turned inward, delayed, or in recovery. Some readers use only upright cards; others include reversed for added nuance. No single reading method is the only correct one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Tarot predict the future accurately?
Tarot doesn't provide a fixed, predetermined future. The cards reflect current energy and tendencies — the future changes as actions and awareness change. Tarot's role is to illuminate what's at work, not to dictate what will happen.
How often should I get a reading?
There are no hard rules. Many people pull one card each morning for daily guidance, or read before an important decision. However, asking the same question repeatedly in one day is rarely useful — the cards reflect your current state, which needs time to shift.
Does a reversed card mean something bad?
Not necessarily. A reversed card often shows blocked energy, an inward turn, or a phase of transformation. A card that feels challenging upright (like The Tower or Five of Swords) can sometimes carry a more constructive meaning when reversed — depending on the overall spread context.
How should I phrase my question for clearer results?
Open-ended questions tend to produce deeper insights than yes/no questions. Instead of "Does he love me?", try "What is influencing this relationship right now?" — the latter gives Tarot room to point in multiple directions. The more specific the question is about the issue rather than another person, the more useful the reading.
What's the difference between Major and Minor Arcana in a reading?
Multiple Major Arcana cards in a spread often signal a pivotal period with larger forces at play beyond ordinary control. A spread dominated by Minor Arcana suggests a situation that depends more on everyday decisions and personal actions.
